Hakko FX-888DX Digital Soldering Station

The Hakko FX-888DX is an upgraded digital soldering station that improves on the legendary FX-888D with a more intuitive temperature adjustment interface and a parameter lock to prevent accidental digital calibration when changing temperature. The new temperature dial combined with the digital display makes it easier than ever to set and monitor temperature precisely, while increased power delivers faster heat recovery. The slender, lightweight ergonomic iron design reduces operator fatigue during extended use. ESD safe construction protects sensitive components. Compatible with a wide selection of T15 series tips. Available in Blue/Yellow, Silver, and Yellow versions.

Note: The Hakko FX-888D was discontinued in March 2024 and replaced by the FX-888DX. If you are looking for the FX-888D, the FX-888DX is the current direct replacement.

Soldering Tip Care for FX-888DX (T15 Series)

Proper tip maintenance extends tip life and ensures consistent heat transfer. Key practices for your T15 series tips:

  • Tin the tip before and after each use to prevent oxidation
  • Use brass wire tip cleaner instead of wet sponges — less thermal shock, longer tip life
  • Avoid high temperatures when not needed — oxidation accelerates above 800°F (427°C)
  • Never file or sand tips — this removes the protective iron plating and causes rapid corrosion
  • Store tinned — always leave a coat of fresh solder on the tip when powering down

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hakko FX-888DX the same as the FX888DX?
Yes — FX-888DX and FX888DX refer to the same Hakko digital soldering station. The hyphenated form (FX-888DX) is Hakko's official model designation; FX888DX is a common alternate spelling used in search.

What is the difference between the FX-888DX and FX-888D?
The FX-888DX replaces the discontinued FX-888D (discontinued March 2024) with a more intuitive temperature dial, a parameter lock to prevent accidental calibration changes, and increased power for faster heat recovery. Importantly, the FX-888DX uses T15 series tips, while the FX-888D used T18 series tips — the two tip series are not interchangeable.

What tips are compatible with the FX-888DX?
The FX-888DX uses Hakko T15 series tips, available in a wide range of geometries including conical, chisel, bevel, knife, and specialty shapes. Note: T18 tips from the FX-888D are NOT compatible with the FX-888DX.

Is the FX-888DX ESD safe?
Yes — the FX-888DX is ESD safe, making it suitable for use in ESD-protected areas (EPAs) when soldering sensitive electronic components and assemblies.

What colors is the FX-888DX available in?
The FX-888DX is available in Blue/Yellow (FX888DX-010BY), Silver (FX888DX-010SV), and Yellow (FX888DX-010YW).

Is the FX-888DX suitable for lead-free soldering?
Yes — the FX-888DX's temperature range (120–899°F / 48–482°C) fully covers the higher temperatures required for lead-free SAC alloys (typically 217–221°C melting point), while the fast ceramic heating element maintains stable temperatures for consistent lead-free joints.
