Transforming Technologies 7100.EFM51.WT Warmbier EFM51WT Electrostatic Field Meter Walking Test Kit

The Transforming Technologies EFM51WT is a handheld electrostatic field meter and ESD floor walking test kit used to measure the voltage generated on a person’s body while walking on an ESD floor with ESD footwear, per ANSI/ESD STM 97.2 and IEC 61340-4-5. This test is the definitive method for verifying that a floor/footwear grounding system is actually controlling body voltage during normal movement — not just measuring floor resistance in isolation. The EFM51 holds both the PEAK body voltage generated during the walking cycle and the LIVE static voltage on the operator’s body. Beyond the walking test, the EFM51 is a fully functional static field meter that measures electrostatic fields, surface potentials, and discharge times (ionizer performance testing requires the optional CPS accessory, p/n 7100.EFM51.CPS.SET). Made in Germany.

Sold individually. Kit includes: EFM51 static field meter, walking test adapter plate, hand probe, and conductive carrying case.

EFM51WT Walking Test Procedure

Setup: Place the EFM51 in the grounded foam base on a flat surface near the floor to be tested. Hold the function button until “change mode” appears, then press until “Max Value” appears (6 button presses). The mode activates after 2 seconds.

Test: Hold the probe in one hand and walk a six-step pattern on the floor section — forward, backward, and crossover steps — then come to rest with both feet on the floor in front of the meter. Perform the test three times and record results.

Reading results: The upper display shows the maximum positive and negative body voltage generated during walking (Maximum Body Voltage). The lower line shows the minimum body voltage with both feet at rest on the floor (Minimum Body Voltage).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ESD floor walking test and why is it required?

The walking test per ANSI/ESD STM 97.2 and IEC 61340-4-5 measures the actual electrostatic charge generated on a person’s body while walking on an ESD floor with ESD footwear. Floor resistance measurements alone (per STM 97.1) do not account for the dynamic interaction between the floor, footwear, and the person’s body during movement. The walking test is the only method that verifies the complete floor/footwear system is controlling body voltage to acceptable levels during real-world use. Many ESD program audits and ANSI/ESD S20.20 compliance programs require walking test data.

Can the EFM51 be used for purposes other than the walking test?

Yes. The EFM51 is a fully functional electrostatic field meter that measures static fields, surface potentials, and discharge times independently of the walking test function. With the optional charge plate set (p/n 7100.EFM51.CPS.SET), it can also be used for ionizer performance testing — making it a versatile multi-function ESD measurement tool.

What standards does the EFM51WT walking test comply with?

The EFM51WT walking test kit is designed for use per ANSI/ESD STM 97.2 (ESD Association standard for floor/footwear walking test) and IEC 61340-4-5 (international standard for footwear and floor combinations). Both standards define the test procedure, acceptance criteria, and documentation requirements for ESD floor/footwear system qualification.

What are the acceptance criteria for the walking test?

Per ANSI/ESD S20.20, the body voltage generated during the walking test must not exceed 100V for most ESD-sensitive device handling environments. Your specific program limits may vary — consult your ESD control plan and the applicable standard for your required body voltage threshold.
