EPA RECOGNITION & REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
40 CFR 745.88 Recognition:
The D-Lead® test kit is EPA-recognized for use in determining the presence of lead-based paint in:
• Pre-1978 Housing: Residential properties built before 1978
• Child-Occupied Facilities: Daycare centers, preschools, kindergartens
• Target Housing: Any housing constructed prior to 1978
RRP Rule Compliance:
Meets EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule requirements for:
• Pre-renovation lead paint testing
• Determining if lead-safe work practices are required
• Documenting lead-based paint presence
OSHA Compliance:
Supports OSHA 29 CFR 1926.62 requirements for:
• Lead hazard assessment
• Worker exposure determination
• Workplace safety documentation
HOW IT WORKS
Chemical Detection Method:
The D-Lead® test uses a colorimetric chemical reaction to detect lead. When the test solution contacts lead-based paint, a chemical reaction produces a pink/red color change. The intensity of the color indicates the presence and approximate concentration of lead.
Detection Threshold:
• Sensitivity: 1.0 mg/cm² (regulatory threshold for lead-based paint)
• Positive Result: Pink or red color change
• Negative Result: No color change (remains clear or yellow)
• Result Time: 30 seconds
SIMPLE 3-STEP TESTING PROCESS
Step 1: Prepare Surface
• Cut through all paint layers to bare substrate
• Create small test area (approximately 1/4 inch)
• Ensure all paint layers are exposed
Step 2: Apply Test Solution
• Squeeze test swab to release solution
• Rub swab on exposed paint layers
• Ensure solution contacts all paint layers
Step 3: Read Results
• Wait 30 seconds
• Observe swab tip for color change
• Pink/red = positive for lead
• No color change = negative for lead
WHAT CAN BE TESTED
Paint Surfaces:
• Interior walls and ceilings
• Exterior siding and trim
• Doors and window frames
• Baseboards and molding
• Railings and banisters
• Cabinets and furniture
• Metal surfaces (radiators, pipes)
Other Materials:
• Dust wipe samples
• Soil samples
• Ceramic glazes
• Painted toys
• Art supplies

PRE-1978 HOUSING REQUIREMENTS
Why Test for Lead Paint?
Lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978. Any housing built before 1978 is presumed to contain lead-based paint unless testing proves otherwise.
Health Hazards:
• Lead poisoning in children (developmental delays, learning disabilities)
• Lead exposure in adults (high blood pressure, kidney damage)
• Renovation activities can create lead dust hazards
Legal Requirements:
• EPA RRP Rule: Contractors must test or presume lead presence before renovation
• Disclosure Requirements: Sellers and landlords must disclose known lead hazards
• OSHA Standards: Employers must protect workers from lead exposure
ADVANTAGES OVER XRF TESTING
D-Lead® Chemical Test vs. XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence):
D-Lead® Advantages:
• Lower Cost: $4-5 per test vs. $20,000+ XRF equipment
• No Certification Required: Anyone can use (XRF requires certified operator)
• Portable: Lightweight kit vs. heavy XRF analyzer
• No Calibration: Ready to use (XRF requires daily calibration)
• Detects All Layers: Tests through all paint layers simultaneously
When to Use XRF:
• Non-destructive testing required
• High-volume testing (hundreds of tests per day)
• Quantitative lead concentration needed
KIT CONTENTS
• 24 individual D-Lead® test swabs
• Instruction manual
• Interpretation guide
• Safety information
• Storage case
STORAGE & HANDLING
• Storage Temperature: Room temperature (59-86°F / 15-30°C)
• Shelf Life: 2 years from manufacture date
• Storage Location: Cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
• Handling: Wear gloves when handling test swabs
• Disposal: Follow local regulations for chemical waste disposal
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
• Wear protective gloves when testing
• Avoid contact with skin and eyes
• Do not ingest test solution
• Keep out of reach of children
• Use in well-ventilated areas
• Wash hands after testing
• Dispose of used swabs properly
INTERPRETING RESULTS
Positive Result (Pink/Red Color):
• Lead is present at or above 1.0 mg/cm²
• Surface is considered lead-based paint
• Lead-safe work practices required
• Further testing may be needed for exact concentration
Negative Result (No Color Change):
• Lead is not present at detectable levels
• Surface is not lead-based paint
• Standard work practices may be used
Inconclusive Result:
• Faint color or uncertain result
• Retest with new swab
• Consider XRF or lab analysis for confirmation
DOCUMENTATION & RECORD KEEPING
For regulatory compliance, document:
• Date and time of testing
• Location of test (room, surface, component)
• Test result (positive/negative)
• Tester name and signature
• Photos of test location (recommended)
• Lot number of test kit used
