Thermaltronics M6BV050H — Bevel 45° 5.00mm (0.20") Power Plus Soldering Tip

The Thermaltronics M6BV050H (SKU: M6BV050H) is a Power Plus series bevel soldering tip with a 45° bevel geometry and 5.00mm (0.20") tip width. Designed for use with Thermaltronics TMT-9000S and compatible Metcal MX-500, MX-5000, and MX-5200 soldering systems. Power Plus tips feature a larger copper mass and extra plating compared to standard tips, delivering significant performance gains for heavy-duty soldering applications without requiring higher tip temperatures. The bevel geometry provides a broad angled contact surface ideal for drag soldering, pad tinning, and high-thermal-demand joints.

Note: 3/4 week lead time.

Soldering Tip Care Guide

Proper tip maintenance is critical to maximizing tip life and solder joint quality. The four primary causes of tip failure are cracking, corrosion, dewetting, and wear.

Cracking: Caused by excessive pressure applied to the tip during soldering. Pressing harder does NOT improve heat transfer — it causes compression failure in the iron plating, which propagates to the copper core and destroys the tip. Use the largest tip geometry suitable for the joint, and use molten solder as a thermal bridge between tip and joint. Never use the tip as a pry bar or strike it against hard surfaces.

Corrosion: Flux chemically attacks the tip plating at soldering temperatures. Use the least aggressive flux that will do the job — RMA flux is recommended for maximum tip life. Clean tips with a brass wire cleaner or a clean, damp sponge only. Never use abrasive materials. Use deionized or distilled water to moisten sponges. Always tin the tip with RMA solder before storing — never use no-clean, water-soluble, or acid flux core solders for tinning.

Dewetting: The most common failure mode. Caused by oxidation of the iron plating — iron oxide will not wet with solder and acts as a thermal insulator. Minimize oxidation by keeping the tip tinned at all times, soldering at the lowest effective temperature, and turning the iron off when not in use. Oxidation rate roughly doubles with every 10°C increase in temperature.

Wear: The expected end-of-life failure mode. Each joint causes slight abrasion of the iron plating. Use the bluntest and heaviest tip suitable for the task — heavier tips have thicker plating and longer life. The Power Plus design specifically addresses this with extra plating for extended tip life. Never use commercial tip tinners for routine maintenance; they contain abrasives that remove plating.

Tip Care Summary

  • Always keep the tip tinned with RMA solder
  • Use the lowest effective soldering temperature
  • Clean with brass wire cleaner or clean damp sponge only — never abrasives
  • Use deionized or distilled water on sponges
  • Turn the iron off when not in use
  • Never use the tip as a pry bar or strike it against hard surfaces
  • Do not use commercial tip tinners for routine maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions

What soldering stations is the Thermaltronics M6BV050H compatible with?
The M6BV050H is compatible with Thermaltronics TMT-9000S-1 and TMT-9000S-2 stations, as well as Metcal MX-500, MX-5000, and MX-5200 systems. Thermaltronics Power Plus tips are designed as high-performance alternatives to Metcal OEM tips for these platforms.

What is the advantage of Thermaltronics Power Plus tips over standard tips?
Power Plus tips feature a larger copper mass and extra iron plating compared to standard M-series tips. This delivers greater thermal capacity for heavy-duty soldering — maintaining tip temperature on thermally demanding joints without needing to increase station temperature, which extends tip life and reduces thermal stress on components.

When should I use a 5.00mm bevel tip?
A 5.00mm bevel tip like the M6BV050H is ideal for drag soldering multi-pin connectors and ICs, pad tinning on large pads, and any application requiring efficient heat transfer across a broad contact area. The 45° bevel angle provides a flat contact surface that maximizes pad contact while maintaining directional control.

How do I extend the life of my Thermaltronics M6BV050H tip?
Keep the tip tinned at all times with RMA solder, solder at the lowest effective temperature, clean only with a brass wire cleaner or clean damp sponge, and turn the station off when not in use. The Power Plus extra plating already provides extended life — proper care maximizes that advantage. See the Tip Care Guide section above for full details.

Is the Thermaltronics M6BV050H compatible with lead-free solder?
Yes. The M6BV050H is compatible with lead-free solder alloys including SAC305. The Power Plus larger copper mass is especially beneficial for lead-free processes, which require higher temperatures and place greater thermal demand on the tip. Use the lowest effective temperature and keep the tip well-tinned to minimize oxidation.
