Hakko T18-I — Ultra Fine Conical Solder Tip, 0.20mm

The Hakko T18-I is a 0.20mm ultra fine conical solder tip for the Hakko FX-888D, FX-888, and legacy 900M/936/937 series soldering stations. The I-type designation indicates the finest standard-length conical in the T18 series, tapering to a 0.20mm point for micro-precision SMD rework, ultra-fine-pitch component touch-up, tacking of 0402 and smaller passives, fine wire attachment, and any application requiring the smallest possible contact footprint on a standard-length shank. Unlike the T18-BL (which shares the 0.20mm point with extended reach), the T18-I delivers the same ultra-fine precision in a standard-length body suited for open, accessible work areas.

Soldering Tip Care Guide

  • Tin before and after every use — ultra-fine tips oxidize extremely rapidly; always maintain a solder coat on the point before setting the iron down.
  • Use brass wire tip cleaner with extreme care — use very gentle strokes in brass wool (Hakko 599B-02) to avoid bending or deforming the 0.20mm point. Never use a wet sponge on ultra-fine tips.
  • Re-tin immediately after every cleaning stroke — oxidation begins within seconds on a 0.20mm point exposed at operating temperature.
  • Use tip tinner/activator at the first sign of dewetting — apply tip tinner immediately if the point loses wettability; do not allow oxidation to progress.
  • Keep temperature at the lowest effective setpoint — ultra-fine tips degrade significantly faster at high idle temperatures.
  • Replace at the first sign of deformation, pitting, or persistent dewetting — a 0.20mm tip that is bent or oxidized cannot deliver precision joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the T18-I, T18-BL, and T18-B?

The T18-I is a standard-length ultra-fine conical at 0.20mm — the finest point available in a normal-length shank, best for open and accessible micro rework. The T18-BL shares the same 0.20mm point but with an extended shank for additional reach into recessed or obstructed areas. The T18-B is a standard-length conical at 0.50mm — less fine but more thermally efficient and more durable for general precision rework. Choose the I for fine open-access work, the BL when reach is also needed, and the B for general SMD rework where 0.20mm precision is not required.

What is a 0.20mm conical tip best suited for?

A 0.20mm conical tip is designed for the most demanding micro-precision soldering tasks: tacking and reworking 0402, 0201, and smaller passives; touching up individual leads on ultra-fine-pitch ICs; attaching fine gauge wire (30 AWG and smaller); and any application where even a 0.50mm tip would risk contacting adjacent pads or components. Due to the very small contact area, heat transfer is limited — this tip is not suited for through-hole work or larger joints.

What stations is the Hakko T18-I compatible with?

The T18-I is compatible with the Hakko FX-888D, FX-888, 936, 936-ESD, 937, 928, 913, 907, 907-ESD, 900M, 900M-ESD, and 703 soldering stations and irons. It is not compatible with the FX-951 (T15 series) or FX-971/FX-972 (T39 series).

How do T18 tips differ from T15 and T39 series tips?

T18 tips are designed for the FX-888D/FX-888 and legacy 900M/936 series stations. T15 tips are for the now-discontinued FX-951 station. T39 tips are for the current FX-971 and FX-972 stations. The three series are not interchangeable — always match the tip series to your specific station model.
