The JBC CL8499 is the CLM Manual Tip Cleaner — JBC’s complete 3-method tip cleaning system in a single station. It combines brass wool, a sponge, and a wiper in one compact unit with a splash guard and anti-splash membrane to keep the work area free of solder particles. A non-slip base holds the cleaner stable during use without requiring the operator to hold it down. Includes one S0354 sponge (36 × 69mm) and one CL6210 brass wool pad. What is the difference between brass wool and sponge cleaning, and which should I use?
Brass wool is the preferred daily cleaning method — it removes flux and oxide residue without causing thermal shock (the tip stays hot), and leaves a protective solder layer on the tip surface. Sponge cleaning with distilled water causes thermal shock each time the hot tip contacts the cool damp sponge, which over time can cause tip cracking or accelerated wear. Use brass wool as your primary cleaning method and the sponge only when needed for stubborn residue. Always use distilled water in the sponge — minerals in tap water react with the tin coating and accelerate tip degradation.

What replacement consumables are available for the CL8499?

Is the CL8499 compatible with all JBC handpieces?
Yes — the CL8499 is a universal manual tip cleaner compatible with all JBC handpieces and tip series including C115, C210, C245, and others. It is also compatible with most other brand soldering irons. The three cleaning surfaces accommodate tips of all sizes from ultra-fine nano tips to large chisel cartridges.

How often should I clean my soldering tip?
Clean the tip before and after each solder joint for best results in precision work, or at minimum between component leads during continuous soldering. Always clean and re-tin the tip before setting the iron down, and always re-tin before picking it back up. A clean, tinned tip transfers heat more efficiently and lasts significantly longer than an oxidized tip.

Why is the anti-splash membrane important?
When cleaning a hot soldering tip, solder particles and flux residue can spray outward — landing on the PCB, adjacent components, or the operator. Solder particles on a PCB can cause solder bridges and short circuits. The CL8499’s anti-splash membrane contains this spatter within the cleaner, protecting the work area and improving process cleanliness.
