Permabond AA000500050T0101, LH050 Anaerobic Threadsealant, 50ml Tube, Case of 10

Permabond LH050 is a general-purpose anaerobic pipe sealant with PTFE for threaded metallic joints, particularly steel and brass. It dispenses as a smooth white paste, fills the space between threads, and cures at ambient temperature when confined between metal surfaces. Its low locking strength supports disassembly while helping resist vibration loosening. SKU AA000500050T0101 is supplied as 50 ml tubes, case of 10.

Best Uses / Applications

  • General-purpose sealing of threaded metal pipes, plugs, and fittings.
  • Steel and brass pipe joints where a cured sealant is preferred to pipe tape or non-curing pipe dope.
  • Qualified fluid, air, gas, and chemical systems after confirming compatibility and operating conditions.
  • Assemblies requiring directional freedom and low locking strength for later disassembly.

Key Features

  • PTFE-containing methacrylate-ester formulation.
  • Solvent-free formulation that cures at room temperature.
  • Smooth paste fills the threaded joint rather than shredding or tearing like tape.
  • Helps lock fittings against vibration, tampering, and variable-temperature effects.
  • Maximum gap fill of 0.5 mm / 0.02 in.
  • Typical handling strength in 2 hours and full strength in 24 hours on M10 steel at 23°C.

Copper and its alloys promote faster cure. Oxidized or passivated surfaces, including stainless steel, cure more slowly. Lower temperatures and larger gaps extend curing. Permabond A905, ASC10, or controlled heat may be considered with manufacturer guidance.

Immediate Seal vs. Full Cure

The manufacturer TDS states that LH050 provides an immediate air-pressure seal up to 1,000 psi with limited hand tightening and that, after cure, sealing capability is typically up to the pipe's burst rating. These are manufacturer performance statements, not a universal system pressure rating or permission to place every assembly into immediate high-pressure service. Validate the actual pipe, thread fit, medium, temperature, cure, and applicable use limitations. The 7 MPa compressive shear value is a strength test result, not a pipe pressure rating.

Pipe Size & Application Guidance

Permabond's pipe-size article distinguishes classification scope from general sealing capability. Do not interpret a classification pipe-size limit as a universal maximum joint size, or assume larger pipes meet the same classification. Obtain current classification documentation and application-specific guidance when it is required.

Pipe size / consideration Manufacturer guidance
Up to 1½-inch diameter Apply to the leading 3–4 male threads, halfway around the pipe.
Larger than 1½-inch diameter Apply to the leading 3–4 male threads completely around the pipe.
2–4-inch pipe The article recommends ASC10 to support curing through the gap. It notes some users instead allow 72 hours without activator; do not treat that as a guaranteed cure schedule for your joint.
Greater than 4-inch pipe The article reports limited information; consult Permabond before specifying.
Gap Do not exceed the stated 0.5 mm / 0.02-inch maximum; validate cure and sealing for the actual joint.

Understanding Classification & Sprinkler-Head Selection

Permabond's April 2019 classification article clarifies that its stated 300 psig classification limit for LH050 applies specifically to natural gas. Classification describes a particular tested use; it does not establish the product's strength or maximum sealing pressure for other applications. Confirm current classification scope, pipe-size limits, and conditions with Permabond before specification. Read Permabond's UL classification explanation.

For replaceable sprinkler heads, low strength matters. Permabond's January 2024 article describes LH050 as a general-purpose pipe sealant but says it can be too strong for sprinkler-head sealing; it identifies the separate LH057 grade for that purpose. Do not assume LH050's general pipe-sealing use makes it the preferred sprinkler-head sealant. The article's CPVC-system compatibility discussion concerns LH056, not LH050. Read Permabond's sprinkler-head selection guidance.

Selection Comparison

Selection need LH050 Alternative consideration
General-purpose metal pipe sealing PTFE-containing, low-locking-strength paste Check medium, gap, pipe size, and operating conditions.
Sensitive hydraulic systems prioritizing unfilled resin Contains PTFE Evaluate the separate LM012 hydraulic grade and its own specifications.
Potable-water project This listing is standard LH050 Evaluate LH050 PURE with current grade-specific documentation; do not transfer PURE claims to this product.
Replaceable sprinkler heads Manufacturer cautions it can be too strong for this task Evaluate the separate LH057 grade with manufacturer guidance.
Plastic pipe Not recommended Choose a process specifically suitable for the plastic and system.

Use Permabond's anaerobic thread-sealant selection guide to compare grade categories. Match the grade to the metal, fluid, gap, service conditions, and required current documentation rather than choosing by bottle size alone.

Chemical Resistance: Published Test Conditions

Surface Preparation & Directions for Use

  1. Make metal threads clean, dry, and grease-free. Use a suitable cleaner such as acetone or isopropanol after checking compatibility with surrounding materials.
  2. If using ASC10, follow manufacturer instructions, allow it to evaporate, and then apply sealant. Do not mix ASC10 into the anaerobic adhesive.
  3. Keep the dispensing tip from contacting metal. Apply to the leading 3–4 male threads using the circumference coverage appropriate to the pipe size.
  4. Screw fittings together and orient as required within a suitable joint design.
  5. Inspect for a visible bead around the entire circumference. If it is absent, repeat with more sealant.
  6. Allow sufficient cure before service. The 2-hour handling and 24-hour full-strength values apply to M10 steel at 23°C, not every pipe joint.

LH050 is designed for threaded metallic pipe joints, not plastic components. It is not recommended for oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or other strong oxidizing materials. It may adversely affect some thermoplastics. Consult the SDS. For professional or industrial use only; keep out of reach of children.

Technical & Safety Documents

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LH050 used for?

It is a general-purpose PTFE-containing sealant for threaded metallic pipe joints, particularly steel and brass. It seals the thread space and helps resist vibration loosening while retaining low locking strength for disassembly.

Can it seal plastic pipe?

No. The TDS specifies metallic pipe joints and does not recommend LH050 for plastic components. Do not transfer the separate LH056 grade's CPVC-system compatibility statement to LH050.

Is an immediate air seal the same as full cure?

No. The manufacturer states immediate air sealing up to 1,000 psi, but typical full strength on M10 steel at 23°C takes 24 hours. Qualify your assembly and service conditions rather than assuming immediate readiness for every pressure or fluid.

How much sealant should I apply?

Apply to the leading 3–4 male threads. Cover halfway around pipes up to 1½ inches and completely around larger pipes, then inspect for a visible bead around the entire assembled circumference.

Can I mix ASC10 into LH050?

No. The manufacturer's article says to apply ASC10 to the surface, allow evaporation, and then apply LH050. Do not mix activator into the sealant.

Is LH050 the same as LH050 PURE?

No. They are separate grades. Do not apply the PURE grade's drinking-water documentation to standard LH050.

Is LH050 the preferred sealant for replaceable sprinkler heads?

Permabond cautions that LH050 can be too strong for sprinkler-head sealing and identifies LH057 for that application. Evaluate the specific grade and current manufacturer instructions.

Does the 300 psig classification statement apply to every fluid?

Permabond's classification article says that particular limit applies to natural gas. It is not a universal operating-pressure rating; confirm the current classification and requirements of the intended system.

Can it be used with oxygen?

No. The TDS does not recommend LH050 for oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or strong oxidizers.
