Permabond AA00040P250B0101, HH040 Pure, NSF 61 Approved Anaerobic Retainer, 250ml Bottle, Case of 4

Permabond HH040 PURE is a single-component, thixotropic anaerobic retaining compound for mating metal parts. It cures when confined between metal surfaces with oxygen excluded, filling the clearance and forming a tough cross-linked plastic that retains the assembly. SKU AA00040P250B0101 is supplied as 250 ml bottles, case of four. HH040 PURE is a distinct grade, not simply a different package of standard green HH040.

Best Uses / Applications

  • Metal shaft-hub and cylindrical assemblies requiring retention of mating components.
  • Slip-fit assemblies where a validated adhesive joint can replace reliance on an interference fit.
  • Press-fit and shrink-fit assembly processes following manufacturer directions.
  • Drinking-water component projects evaluating the PURE grade's manufacturer-stated certification, subject to confirmation of current listing conditions and finished-assembly requirements.

Key Features

  • One-part methacrylate formulation with no two-component mixing step.
  • Colorless to light amber appearance, with UV fluorescence.
  • Thixotropic viscosity of 5,000 cP at 25°C for controlled dispensing.
  • Typical steel collar-and-pin shear strength of 14 MPa.
  • Fills clearance between mating parts to prevent relative movement and help address wear, erosion, pitting, and corrosion.
  • Manufacturer-reported environmental and temperature resistance; validate actual operating conditions.

Technical Specifications

Typical guideline values from HH040 PURE Global TDS Revision 3, dated October 17, 2016. The data sheet does not constitute an application specification.

Property Typical value / condition

Working strength at 23°C 1 hour on M10 steel
Full strength at 23°C 24 hours on M10 steel
Breakaway torque, ISO 10964 25 N·m on M10 steel
Prevailing torque, ISO 10964 37 N·m on M10 steel
Shear strength, ISO 10123 14 MPa / 2,000 psi on steel collar and pin
Dielectric strength 11 kV/mm
Thermal conductivity 0.2 W/(m·K)
Minimum cured exposure temperature −55°C / −65°F, depending on bonded materials
Storage temperature 5–25°C / 41–77°F

Copper and its alloys promote faster cure. Oxidized or passivated surfaces, including stainless steel, cure more slowly. Low temperatures and larger clearances can extend cure time. Permabond A905, ASC10, or heat may be considered with manufacturer guidance. Handling strength does not mean full-service strength.

HH040 PURE vs. Standard HH040

Selection point HH040 PURE Standard HH040
Appearance in the respective TDS Colorless to light amber Green
Drinking-water documentation The PURE TDS states NSF/ANSI Standard 61 certification. Do not transfer the PURE grade's certification statement to standard HH040.
Technical authority Use the HH040 PURE data sheet and current listing conditions. Use the standard HH040 data sheet.
Interchangeability Similar typical retaining properties do not establish that the grades are interchangeable for a qualified manufacturing process.

Manufacturer Certification Statement

Permabond's October 17, 2016 HH040 PURE TDS identifies this grade as an NSF-certified drinking-water system component and states conformity with NSF/ANSI Standard 61, Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects. This is a statement from the dated manufacturer document, not confirmation of a current listing or blanket approval of a completed assembly. Obtain current certification documentation and applicable use conditions from Permabond before specifying it for a drinking-water project. Do not assume that using the adhesive alone certifies a finished product or eliminates its testing requirements.

Joint Design: Clearance & Surface Finish

Bond area, bondline thickness, and surface finish affect joint strength. The PURE TDS recommends keeping diametrical clearance at or below 0.005 in for maximum strength, distinct from its 0.01 in maximum gap-fill value.

Diametrical clearance Strength retained in TDS example
0.0025 in 93%
0.0050 in 91%
0.0075 in 85%
0.0100 in 62%

Validate the actual joint under its operating loads; these laboratory examples are not assembly load ratings.

Surface Preparation & Directions for Use

  1. Make the metal surfaces clean, dry, and grease-free. Use a suitable solvent-based cleaner such as acetone or isopropanol after checking compatibility with surrounding materials.
  2. For slip fits, apply adhesive to the leading edge of the pin and inside the collar, then assemble with a twisting action.
  3. For press fits, apply adhesive to the pin and collar and assemble using a press.
  4. For shrink fits, follow the TDS procedure: apply adhesive to the pin, heat the collar to create clearance, and assemble. Validate the heating process for the parts and adhesive.
  5. Allow the parts to fixture before disturbing them, and allow sufficient cure before service.

HH040 PURE is not recommended for oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or other strong oxidizing materials. It may adversely affect some thermoplastics; confirm compatibility. Follow the SDS and good industrial hygiene practices.

Technical & Safety Documents

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HH040 PURE the same as green HH040?

No. It is a distinct grade with its own data sheet and manufacturer certification statement. Its uncured appearance is colorless to light amber rather than green.

What does HH040 PURE retain?

It retains mating metal parts in cylindrical assemblies such as shaft-hub designs. The confined adhesive cures between the metal surfaces to prevent relative movement.

Does it need mixing?

No. It is a single-component anaerobic compound that cures in contact with metal when oxygen is excluded.

How long does curing take?

On M10 steel at 23°C, the TDS gives 15 minutes to handling strength, 1 hour to working strength, and 24 hours to full strength. Metal type, temperature, and clearance can change those times.

Does the drinking-water statement certify my completed assembly?

No blanket finished-assembly approval should be inferred. The dated TDS states NSF/ANSI Standard 61 certification for the adhesive grade. Obtain current documentation and applicable use conditions from Permabond for your project.

Is the maximum gap also the preferred design clearance?

No. Maximum gap fill is 0.25 mm / 0.01 in, while the TDS recommends diametrical clearance no greater than 0.005 in for maximum strength.

Can HH040 PURE be used in oxygen service?

No. The TDS does not recommend it for oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or other strong oxidizers.

What is included in this listing?

SKU AA00040P250B0101 is a case of four 250 ml bottles of Permabond HH040 PURE. Store at 5–25°C and follow the supplied handling instructions.
