Hakko T18-K — Knife Solder Tip, 5.00mm

The Hakko T18-K is a 5.00mm knife solder tip for the Hakko FX-888D, FX-888, and legacy 900M/936/937 series soldering stations. The angled knife blade profile provides a large, flat working surface for drag soldering dense lead arrays, large pad tinning, wire stripping and forming, bus bar and terminal soldering, and applications requiring aggressive heat delivery across a wide contact area. The 5.00mm blade width makes the T18-K one of the widest tips in the T18 series, well suited for high-mass work and production drag soldering tasks.

Soldering Tip Care Guide

  • Tin the full blade surface before and after every use — apply fresh solder across the entire knife face to protect the plating. The larger surface area of a knife tip means more exposure to oxidation if left bare.
  • Use brass wire tip cleaner — plunge the blade into brass wool (Hakko 599B-02) to remove flux residue without thermal shock. Avoid wet sponges where possible.
  • Re-tin immediately after cleaning — never leave a bare blade exposed at temperature; oxidation begins within seconds on a knife tip’s wide surface.
  • Use tip tinner/activator on oxidized areas — if any portion of the blade dewets, apply tip tinner compound promptly to restore the tinned surface before the condition spreads.
  • Keep temperature as low as practical — lower idle temperatures slow oxidation and extend tip life significantly.
  • Replace tips showing cracks, pitting, or persistent dewetting — a damaged tip transfers heat poorly and produces unreliable joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

What applications is a knife tip best suited for?

Knife tips are most effective for drag soldering rows of closely spaced leads, large flat pad tinning, cutting and stripping fine wire insulation, bus bar and terminal soldering, and forming wire ends before termination. The T18-K’s 5.00mm blade is one of the widest tips in the T18 series, making it particularly well suited for production drag soldering of wide lead arrays and large connector terminations where heat needs to be delivered across a broad contact area quickly.

What stations is the Hakko T18-K compatible with?

The T18-K is compatible with the Hakko FX-888D, FX-888, 936, 936-ESD, 937, 928, 913, 907, 907-ESD, 900M, 900M-ESD, and 703 soldering stations and irons. It is not compatible with the FX-951 (T15 series) or FX-971/FX-972 (T39 series).

How do T18 tips differ from T15 and T39 series tips?

T18 tips are designed for the FX-888D/FX-888 and legacy 900M/936 series stations. T15 tips are for the now-discontinued FX-951 station. T39 tips are for the current FX-971 and FX-972 stations. The three series are not interchangeable — always match the tip series to your specific station model.
