Hakko FT8003-81 Hot Knife Conversion Kit | Wire Stripper for Ultra-Thick Wire & Harness Braid | FT-801 / FT-802
Hakko FT8003-81 Hot Knife Conversion Kit | Wire Stripper for Ultra-Thick Wire & Harness Braid | FT-801 / FT-802
The Hakko FT8003-81 is the complete hot knife conversion kit for the Hakko FT-801 and FT-802 thermal wire stripping stations. The knife blade design is engineered for stripping ultra-thick wires, expando sleeving, and wire harness braid — applications where conventional blade-type strippers cannot apply enough controlled heat to cut cleanly without damaging conductors. The ultra-slim, ergonomic FT-8003 handpiece provides precise blade control with easy blade insertion and removal. ESD safe. Kit includes everything needed to convert an FT-801 or FT-802 station to hot knife operation.

Hot Knife Blade Care Guide
Proper blade care is critical to maintaining clean cuts and extending blade life on the FT-8003 hot knife handpiece.
- Use the correct temperature — set the FT-801/FT-802 station to the appropriate temperature for the wire insulation or sleeving material being cut. Too low and the blade drags and tears; too high and it chars or melts insulation unevenly. Start at the lower end of the recommended range and increase as needed.
- Keep the blade clean — residue from melted insulation, braid, or sleeving accumulates on the blade edge and degrades cut quality. Clean the blade periodically with a dry brass wire brush or Hakko tip cleaner while hot. Never use abrasive pads on the blade edge.
- Use the sleep holder between cuts — place the handpiece in the C5034 sleep holder with guard when not actively cutting. This activates sleep mode on FT-801/FT-802 stations, reducing blade temperature to minimize oxidation and extend blade life during idle periods.
- Replace blades when cut quality degrades — hot knife blades dull and oxidize over time. If the blade is dragging, producing ragged cuts, or leaving excessive residue despite cleaning, replace the G3-1601 blade. Do not attempt to sharpen the blade.
- Handle blades with care — use the B3648 blade removal tool (included) to remove and install blades. Never handle blades bare-handed when hot. Allow the handpiece to cool fully before blade changes if possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the FT8003-81 kit and the FT8003-02 handpiece only?
The FT8003-81 is the complete conversion kit — it includes the FT-8003 handpiece, G3-1601 knife blade, B3253 connecting cord, B3648 blade removal tool, and C5034 sleep holder with guard. The FT8003-02 is the handpiece only, for users who already have the accessories and only need to replace the handpiece itself. If you are setting up hot knife capability for the first time on an FT-801 or FT-802 station, choose the FT8003-81 kit.
What types of wire and materials can the FT-8003 hot knife cut?
The FT-8003 is designed for ultra-thick wire insulation, expando braided sleeving, wire harness braid, and other heavy sleeving or jacket materials that require thermal cutting for clean, sealed edges. It is not designed for fine wire stripping — for fine wire applications, see Hakko’s dedicated thermal wire strippers.
Is the FT8003-81 compatible with the FT-800 station?
Yes, but with a limitation — when used with the FT-800, the sleep mode and auto power-off functions are not available. Full functionality including sleep mode is available on FT-801 and FT-802 stations. For full feature compatibility, use with an FT-801 or FT-802.
How do I replace the G3-1601 knife blade?
Use the included B3648 blade removal tool to safely remove and install blades. Allow the handpiece to cool to a safe handling temperature before blade changes. Insert the new blade until it seats fully in the handpiece. Never force the blade or use non-Hakko tools for blade changes, as this can damage the handpiece blade retention mechanism.
Is the FT-8003 handpiece ESD safe?
Yes — the FT-8003 handpiece is ESD safe with tip-to-ground resistance <2 ohms and tip-to-ground potential <2 mV, making it suitable for use on ESD-sensitive wire harness and cable assemblies in static-controlled production environments.
