Permabond AA00040L001L0101, HH040 Anaerobic Retainer, 1 Liter Bottle, Case of 10

Permabond HH040 is a single-component, high-viscosity anaerobic retaining compound for mating metal parts. It cures when confined between metal surfaces with oxygen excluded, filling the clearance and forming a tough cross-linked plastic that retains the assembly. Ordering code AA00040L001L0101 is supplied as 1-liter bottles, case of 10.

Best Uses / Applications

  • Metal shaft-hub and cylindrical assemblies requiring retention of mating parts.
  • Slip-fit assemblies where the joint design can use adhesive retention instead of relying solely on an interference fit.
  • Press-fit and shrink-fit assemblies following the manufacturer's application directions.
  • Qualified rolled-seam sealing during spin-on fluid-filter manufacture, as described in Permabond's application article.

Key Features

  • One-part acrylic system, with no two-component mixing step.
  • Thixotropic viscosity of 5,000 cP at 25°C for controlled dispensing and gap filling.
  • Typical steel collar-and-pin shear strength of 14 MPa.
  • Green appearance and UV fluorescence.
  • Fills space between mating parts to prevent relative movement and help address wear, erosion, pitting, and corrosion of the joined surfaces.
  • Supports slip-fit shaft-hub assembly designs where engineering validation permits replacement of costly press fits.

Technical Specifications

Typical guideline data from Permabond HH040 Global TDS Revision 3, dated October 17, 2016. The data sheet does not constitute an application specification.

Property Typical value / condition
Ordering code / grade AA00040L001L0101 / HH040
Package 1-liter bottles; case of 10
Chemistry Acrylic; single-component anaerobic retainer
Appearance Green
Viscosity at 25°C 5,000 mPa·s (cP), thixotropic
Specific gravity 1.1
UV fluorescence Yes
Maximum gap fill 0.25 mm / 0.01 in
Maximum thread-size entry The supplied TDS lists M30 and ¾ in together; these are not equivalent dimensions. Confirm the applicable limit with Permabond rather than treating them as a conversion.
Handling strength at 23°C 15 minutes on M10 steel
Working strength at 23°C 1 hour on M10 steel
Full strength at 23°C 24 hours on M10 steel
Breakaway torque, ISO 10964 25 N·m on M10 steel
Prevailing torque, ISO 10964 37 N·m on M10 steel
Shear strength, ISO 10123 14 MPa / 2,000 psi on steel collar and pin
Dielectric strength 11 kV/mm
Thermal conductivity 0.2 W/(m·K)
Minimum cured exposure temperature −55°C / −65°F, depending on bonded materials
Storage temperature 5–25°C / 41–77°F

Copper and its alloys promote faster cure. Oxidized or passivated surfaces, including stainless steel, cure more slowly. Lower temperatures and larger clearances can extend cure time. Permabond A905, ASC10, or heat may be considered with manufacturer guidance. Handling strength is not full-service strength.

Joint Design: Clearance & Surface Finish

Bonded area, bondline thickness, and surface finish determine joint strength. The TDS recommends keeping diametrical clearance at or below 0.005 in for maximum strength. This design recommendation is distinct from the 0.01 in maximum gap-fill value.

Diametrical clearance Strength retained in TDS example
0.0025 in 93%
0.0050 in 91%
0.0075 in 85%
0.0100 in 62%

The manufacturer notes that a machine finish of 60–80 micro-inches typically provides favorable strength with HH040. Validate the complete joint rather than using a laboratory strength value as an assembly load rating.

HH040 for Rolled Seams: Not the Same as a Wicking Weld Sealant

Permabond's article identifies HH040 for sealing the rolled seam that attaches the nut plate to the can during spin-on fluid-filter manufacturing. That application uses a high-viscosity adhesive applied inside the seam. The same article discusses low-viscosity HL126 and A126 for post-assembly wicking into porous welds; those examples should not be attributed to HH040.

Application Approach described by Permabond Selection distinction
Cylindrical metal retention HH040 between mating parts Design for bond area, clearance, surface finish, and cure.
Spin-on filter rolled seams HH040 applied inside the seam during manufacture Qualify the actual seam process and leak performance.
Porous welds or post-assembly wicking Low-viscosity HL126 / A126 examples Do not assume high-viscosity HH040 will wick like these grades.

The article's immediate-sealing description for a qualified manufacturing process does not mean HH040 is instantly cured or ready for every operating load. Read Permabond's seam and weld sealing application article.

Surface Preparation & Directions for Use

  1. Make metal surfaces clean, dry, and grease-free. Use a suitable cleaner, such as acetone or isopropanol, after checking compatibility with surrounding materials.
  2. For slip fits, apply adhesive to the leading edge of the pin and inside the collar, then assemble with a twisting action.
  3. For press fits, apply adhesive to the pin and collar and assemble with a press.
  4. For shrink fits, follow the TDS procedure: apply adhesive to the pin, heat the collar to provide clearance, and assemble. Validate the heating process for the parts and adhesive.
  5. Allow the assembly to fixture before disturbing it and allow sufficient cure before service.

HH040 is not recommended for oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or other strong oxidizers. It may adversely affect some thermoplastics; verify compatibility. Consult the SDS for handling precautions. For professional or industrial use only; keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does HH040 retain?

It retains mating metal parts in cylindrical assemblies such as shaft-hub designs. The confined adhesive cures between the surfaces to prevent relative movement.

Does HH040 need mixing?

No. It is a single-component anaerobic adhesive that cures in contact with metal when oxygen is excluded.

How long does it take to cure?

On M10 steel at 23°C, the TDS gives 15 minutes to handling strength, 1 hour to working strength, and 24 hours to full strength. Metal type, temperature, and clearance change cure speed.

Can it replace a press fit?

The TDS describes slip-fit shaft-hub assemblies as an application. Replacement of an interference fit requires engineering validation of joint geometry, load, clearance, surface finish, and cure.

Is HH040 suitable for sealing porous welds after assembly?

Do not assume so. Permabond's article assigns wicking weld examples to low-viscosity grades and discusses HH040 specifically for rolled seams in spin-on filter manufacture.

Is the maximum gap also the preferred design clearance?

No. The maximum gap fill is 0.25 mm / 0.01 in, while the TDS recommends diametrical clearance no greater than 0.005 in for maximum strength.

Can HH040 be used in oxygen service?

No. The supplied TDS does not recommend oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or other strong oxidizing materials.

What is included in this listing?

SKU AA00040L001L0101 is a case of ten 1-liter bottles of Permabond HH040. This listing is for HH040, not the separate HH040 PURE grade.
