Static shielding bags — the metalized, silver-gray bags most commonly associated with ESD packaging — provide a Faraday cage effect that attenuates electrostatic fields both inside and outside the bag. They are required for storing and shipping ESDS components outside of an ESD-protected area (EPA) per ANSI/ESD S541. Anti-static bags (typically pink or black poly bags) dissipate surface charge but do not provide shielding — they are appropriate for use inside an EPA where components are already in a controlled environment, but should not be used as the sole protection for shipping ESDS items outside the EPA. Using an anti-static bag in place of a shielding bag for outbound shipments is a common and costly compliance error.

When do I need a moisture barrier bag instead of a standard ESD shielding bag?
