What is a Faraday cage and how does it protect electronics in a static shield bag?
A Faraday cage is a conductive enclosure that blocks external electrostatic fields by redistributing charge on its outer surface, preventing the field from penetrating to the interior. In a static shield bag, the metallized layer acts as the Faraday cage — external static charges are reflected and absorbed by the bag’s outer conductive layer rather than passing through to the component inside. This is why static shield bags must be fully sealed to provide protection — an open bag does not form a complete Faraday cage and provides no shielding to the contents.

What is MVTR and why does it matter for moisture-sensitive devices?
MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) measures how much water vapor passes through a material over time — typically expressed in g/m²/day. For moisture-sensitive devices (MSDs), exposure to moisture causes absorbed water to vaporize rapidly during reflow soldering, creating internal pressure that can crack or delaminate the component package — a failure mode called “popcorning.” JEDEC J-STD-033 specifies maximum floor life for MSDs at each moisture sensitivity level (MSL 1–6) and requires MBBs with sufficiently low MVTR for storage and shipping.
