Checklist Point 5: Inspect Wrist Straps and Heel Grounders for Wear

Ionizers are required wherever grounding is not possible — handling bare boards before assembly, for example. Auditors check that ionizers are in the right locations, that their emitter pins have been cleaned on schedule, and that balance voltage has been verified. Pull your ionizer maintenance log and confirm it's current.

If an ionizer has never been formally balanced or its maintenance isn't documented, address that before the audit — not after.

Checklist Point 7: Review Your ESD Control Plan

ANSI ESD S20.20 requires a written ESD Control Plan. Auditors will read it. Common failures: the plan references equipment or procedures that no longer exist, it lists resistance limits that don't match what you're actually measuring, or it hasn't been updated since your last major process change. Review the plan against your current EPA layout, equipment list, and test procedures. Update any discrepancies before the audit.

Checklist Point 8: Audit Your ESD Packaging at Incoming and Outgoing

ESD-sensitive components should arrive in and ship out in compliant packaging — shielding bags, static-dissipative trays, or conductive containers depending on the risk level. Walk your receiving dock and shipping area. Look for components stored in standard poly bags, non-ESD cardboard, or trays that have lost their dissipative properties from repeated use. Document what you find and correct it before the audit.

Checklist Point 9: Confirm Signage, Barriers, and EPA Boundaries Are Intact

EPA boundaries need to be clearly marked. Signage should be posted at all EPA entry points. Common audit findings include missing or faded signs, EPA boundaries that have expanded without being formally documented, and common-area access points that lack any ESD guidance for visitors or contractors. Walk every EPA entry point with fresh eyes — or better, ask someone unfamiliar with the floor to walk it and note what's unclear.

Checklist Point 10: Measure Electrostatic Fields at Key Workstations

Even a properly grounded operator at a properly grounded workstation can be exposed to electrostatic fields from nearby insulative materials — plastic water bottles, standard clipboards, non-ESD binders, personal electronics. A pre-audit walk with a static field meter will identify hidden charge sources that aren't controlled by your program.
